Thanks Ben from Paradise for the shot of the Paradise groomer. TASA OWES A BIG THANKS AND A THUMBS UP TO THE PARADISE GROOMERS!!! During this past week, Paradise (with blessings from the DNR) took one of their groomers through that swampy area between CR 500 and the Falls on the TASA trail! Their equipment weighs a lot less than TASA’s so they were able to get in there and help set it up for TASA. Hopefully it will be set enough that TASA can start grooming this section ourselves this weekend.
SO ON BEHALF OF TASA AND EVERYONE WHO RAILS THE TRAILS; HATS OFF TO PARADISE!!!

Trail Report: December 5, 2007 noon
We still have no contract with the DNR but the groomers are out at our expense. By the end of the day all trails will have been packed at least once. Even if we aren’t getting reimbursed we need to insure they are groomed now or they may not be able to be repaired once we get a contract.
There is good snow levels on all trails 8-14 inches but no base yet. Some of the club trails are not open yet due to the earliness of the season. The downtown trail will not be open until after Christmas, there are still businesses open along where we normally groom. The trail going to Portage Avenue has a gate on it to keep cars out of the City Garage compost area, but you can get around it with your sled, it just keeps the cars out. The forecast is calling for continued cold temps and light snow right thru the weekend.
Remember this is early riding it best with some areas of unfrozen water and dirt under the snow. There are tree stumps, branches, and rough ground under our thin layer of snow, and little traction in some of the corners, so ride careful. We need to have some more snow on what we have now packed to be able to do real fulltime grooming.

Photo taken 12/5/07 Groomer Dan Clementz on the South TASA trail, making a swath so the guys could get in with a 4 WD truck to finish a few signs. The snow was so deep, even after going through with the groomer, that the 4WD truck got stuck. Luckily they had a strap and Groomer Dan could pull the truck out. It ended up with all 3 guys in the groomer to get to the area to sign (instead of trying the truck again!). Thanks to Buzz Medalis (one of TASA’s groomers) for the photo!

It is about 20 miles N. of Newberry. Again, take M-123 N out of Newberry to CR 407 (AKA H-37 and 4 Mile Corner). CR 407 take a left (it only goes one way) and go up about 20 miles (maybe more than that) to CR 416. The area is right at the corner of those two roads.

On CR 446. It is about 2 miles N on M-123 of the RR tracks. As you are heading North, make a left hand turn on CR 446. It is about a mile to the staging area.

Snowmobilers can take the trails north out of Newberry to Grand Marais, and west on to Pictured Rocks area.
There are two basic routes that lead from Newberry to Grand Marais.
A: Follow Trail #9 north to Trail #8 and follow Trail #8 west to Grand Marais.
B: Follow Trail #9 north to Trail #431. Take Trail #431 west to Trail #443. Take Trail #443 north to Grand Marias. (Note For the Winter of 2006 -07: Trail 443 is closed from #88 to #8. All traffic will be diverted onto #88 west to #8 and #888 from the south.)

Snowmobilers can follow Trail #8 from the Paradise Area across the northern part of the Eastern U.P. to Grand Marais.
Grand Marais Trail #8 East – 43 Miles – Courtesy Grand Marais Sno-Trails Association
This trail remains the most popular route between the Reed and Green Bridge near Rainbow Lodge and Grand Marais and is our longest section of the Upper Peninsula Trail System. No where else can you find such variation in terrain or diversity in riding conditions, and experience the impact of weather conditions than along this 43 mile section of trail. If the winds kick up, riders can expect a lot of drifting and whiteout conditions so take care and be observant.
Beginning at the junction of Trail #443 and Trail #8 East crossing M-77 to the 4 corners @ William Hill Road and H-58 on Trail #8 West, a section runs next to a plowed road open to vehicular traffic with many driveways along the way. A 25 mph speed limit is in force on the trail. Riders must remain on alert and stay on the trail. Don’t risk being ticketed for exceeding the speed limit, traveling on the road instead of the trail, and failure to heed stop signs. Sleds passing cars on both sides and far exceeding the posted speed limit have been reported. Mind your P’s and Q’s on this stretch and remember to stop and look before crossing the highway.
